Is Spray Foam a Vapor Barrier? A Michigan Homeowner’s Guide

If you are weighing insulation for a Michigan home, you have probably run into a confusing question: do you need a separate vapor barrier, or does spray foam handle that for you?

Here is the short answer. Closed-cell spray foam, applied about two inches thick or more, works as a vapor barrier on its own. Open-cell spray foam does not. That one difference decides if you need an extra plastic sheet on your walls, and it matters more in Michigan than almost anywhere else.

Let us walk through why, in plain terms.

What a vapor barrier actually does

Warm air holds moisture. In a Michigan winter, the air inside your heated home is warm and damp, and the air outside is cold and dry. That moisture wants to move toward the cold. When it reaches a cold surface inside your wall, attic, or crawl space, it can turn back into water.

That hidden water is the problem. Over time it feeds mold, rot, and rust, and it quietly drags down the R-value of your insulation. A vapor barrier, or more correctly a vapor retarder, slows that moisture down before it can reach a cold spot and cause damage.

For eight or nine months of the year in Michigan, this is a real concern, not a technicality.

Does spray foam count as a vapor barrier?

It depends on which foam you use.

Closed-cell spray foam is dense and rigid. Its cells are packed tight, so water vapor cannot pass through easily. At about two inches thick, closed-cell foam is dense enough to qualify as a Class II vapor retarder, which means it lets through very little moisture (about one perm or less). At that point the foam is doing two jobs at once: it insulates, and it controls vapor, in a single application.

Open-cell spray foam is softer and more breathable. Air and moisture move through it. It is a fine insulator and a strong air sealer, but it is vapor-open. On its own, in a cold Michigan climate, it usually needs a separate vapor retarder added on the warm side.

So when a homeowner asks us “is spray foam a vapor barrier,” the honest answer is: closed-cell is, open-cell is not. Choosing the right one for the space is the whole game.

What Michigan’s climate code expects

Most of Michigan sits in cold climate zone 5, and the northern Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula fall into the even colder zones 6 and 7. Building codes treat these zones seriously because our winters are long and wet.

In these zones, the code calls for a vapor retarder on the warm, inside face of insulated walls. This is where closed-cell spray foam earns its keep. Because two inches or more already performs as a Class II vapor retarder, it can satisfy that requirement without a second product stapled to your studs.

Where this matters most in a Michigan home

Vapor control is not equally important in every part of the house. These are the spots where we see it matter the most:

  • Crawl spaces and basements. These sit against cold, damp ground. Closed-cell foam on the walls and rim joists blocks vapor and stops the musty, clammy feeling that spreads into the rooms above.
  • Rim joists. This narrow band where the floor meets the foundation is a classic spot for cold air and moisture to sneak in. Closed-cell foam seals it in one pass.
  • Attics and roof decks. In an unvented attic, the right foam keeps warm, damp indoor air from reaching the cold roof deck, which protects the wood and helps prevent ice dams.
  • Pole barns and metal buildings. Bare metal sweats when warm air hits it. Closed-cell foam sprayed on the underside stops that condensation before it drips.

Do you still need a separate plastic vapor barrier?

In many closed-cell jobs, no. That is one of the reasons homeowners like it. You get insulation, an air seal, and vapor control from one material, applied in one visit, with no gaps or seams for moisture to find.

With open-cell foam, or with other insulation types like blown cellulose or fiberglass, a separate vapor retarder may be the right call. The correct answer comes from the space, the foam, and your local code, not from a rule of thumb.
