Frequently asked questions.
Is spray foam waterproof?
Closed cell spray foam is a vapor/moisture barrier meaning it won’t allow condensation or sweating to occur as long as the foam insulation is at least 2 inches thick. However, closed cell spray foam does not prevent leaks in foundations or roofs when installed to the interior of a building.
Is spray foam insulation safe?
Spray foam insulation meets all the criteria to be considered safe after its installation process is completed. During installation it can be fumey and proper personal protection equipment is required on site to be in an enclosed space where spray foam is being installed. After the 24 hour cure time (during which the customer is asked to vacate the home), when installed by trained professionals Spray Foam is no more harmful than the foam that surrounds everyday in our cups/couches and seats. The major difference is spray foam is manufactured on site. This is why it is imperative to be sure to hire a reputable spray foam company with proper training and experience and credentials.
Is spray foam insulation flammable?
Some spray foam is not properly tested and should not be used for any areas where humans dwell. Properly tested foam ensures you are getting a safe product that has passed the fire and smoke test ratings. Foam qualified to be in habitable areas should have a class 1 fire rating. For extra precaution, foam left exposed in a habitable space should be coated with a fire retardant paint that most spray foam companies can install after installing the spray foam.
Why is spray foam insulation so expensive?
Spray foam insulation is not an investment to take lightly. However, unlike most building materials used in a structure, your insulation choice is one of the few items on a building where you can actually save money long term. Spray foam insulation requires expensive equipment including a diesel generator, air compressor, hydraulic high pressure hoses and lines, proportioner (very large pump) and spray foam gun as well as a truck for towing it all. All of this equipment must be insured and mobilized to your job, by trained professionals to ensure the job is done correctly and safely. The cost of material for spray foam is also significantly higher than other insulation materials. However, given the energy savings, comfort, efficiency, structural strength and diverse applications, the extra cost is usually not a deterrent given its robust benefits.
